A comprehensive evaluation for Autism is a multi-faceted process designed to accurately diagnose the disorder and differentiate it from other conditions using a wide range of tools and instruments.
Our comprehensive Autism evaluations include:
Diagnostic Structured Interviews: In-depth interviews, utilizing tools like the MIGDAS-2 and/or the ADI-R, are conducted with clients and their close relatives. These structured conversations ensure a thorough exploration of all aspects of their experience, including symptom patterns, onset, duration, and the impact on daily life.
Standardized Rating Scales: We utilize standardized rating scales, such as the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), Autism Spectrum Rating Scale (ASRS), Sensory Profile (SP-2), and Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS-2), Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF-2), to gain a comprehensive understanding of your experiences/your child’s experiences. These tools, often completed by multiple individuals familiar with your daily life, help quantify the presence and frequency of autism-related traits and behaviors. This multifaceted approach ensures a well-rounded perspective of your strengths and challenges.
In-Depth Health, Medical, and Social History: A thorough history to rule out other conditions, including developmental milestones, medical conditions, educational history, family history, and previous evaluations.
Collateral Interviews: To gain a comprehensive understanding, we gather multifaceted insights from a variety of perspectives. This includes interviews with family members, partners, therapists, educators, coaches, employers, and peers, offering a holistic view of the client's experiences and corroborating information gathered through other assessments.
Differential Diagnoses: Careful consideration of other conditions that present similar symptoms, such as learning disabilities, anxiety, mood, and sleep disorders, and potential comorbid conditions (such as AD/HD).
Social Language Testing: Social language testing pinpoints areas of strength and difficulty in social communication. This can include understanding figurative language, interpreting social cues, maintaining conversations, and adapting communication style to different contexts.
Cognitive Performance Testing: Through a combination of IQ and cognitive processing measures, we evaluate executive functioning, language development, and non-verbal problem-solving skills. This in-depth assessment provides valuable insights to support accurate differential diagnoses.
Play-Based Observations: For youth, play-based observations are an integral part of an autism evaluation because they provide a naturalistic setting to assess social interaction, communication skills, and behavioral patterns. Observing how an individual engages in play offers valuable insights into their social-emotional development, imaginative abilities, and problem-solving strategies, which are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of autism-related behaviors.
